If you are just diving into the world of mass text campaigns, you may be wondering why you keep hearing about keywords and what role they play in your marketing strategy.

Simply put, a keyword is a chosen set of characters—letters and/or numbers—that your consumers can text to a 10-digit number or designated text short code in order to opt-in to future SMS marketing campaigns. Once they opt-in, they are automatically added to your contact list and can be opted-in to more specific, targeted campaigns at a later date.

Say a restaurant is promoting its loyalty rewards program and wants to encourage customers to order more often. That restaurant may choose “NACHOS” as their keyword and prompt their customers to send it to a short codea 5-6 digit dedicated code for their business or specific campaign—in order to opt-in to coupons, special deals, and rewards points.

Keywords are also an easy and effective way to opt-in large audiences to a promotional contest. Say a radio station, for example, is giving away free tickets to a local show. In this case, they might encourage listeners to text “WINTIX” to their short code. Everyone who participates by texting in the keyword would then be entered into the contest.

Keywords ensure that an unlimited number of participants have the opportunity to engage in conversations and receive updates from companies, organizations, or causes of their choosing.

While crafting a compelling keyword is important, the majority of the effort is on the part of your consumers to opt-in through a simple text message. A large part of your marketing strategy is conceptualizing an opt-in offer that is hard for customers to refuse and is easily encapsulated by your keyword.

How to Create a Keyword

Step 1: Getting there

Sign in to your account. Once signed in, move to the left side user panel, click “New Keyword” under “Keywords”.

Step 2: Get started on your keyword

Your Keyword Name is the characters that someone will text to opt-in such as “WOW” or “SIGNUP”. Enter the keyword name exactly as you want it texted. Keep it short because it WILL be included in your character counts when you send a message.

Add a short description. This helps keep keywords clear especially when managing multiple keywords.

Do you want anyone to be able to send a blast with this keyword using their phone? Type in their phone number here. Just remember you MUST make them a keyword admin in their contact first. You can always add and remove keyword admins.

Step 3: Add opt-ins

Choose what group(s) will be automatically associated with this keyword. When you send a text using this keyword, these groups will receive the message.

Step 4: Determine keyword automatic messages

Determine your keyword automatic messages.
